Project Overview

Appointed by Padel Social Club as Architectural Lead (RIBA Stages 3–5) and Building Regulations Principal Designer, we delivered a detailed design for a cutting-edge padel tennis facility at The O2, London. The project combines innovative architecture with high-quality leisure spaces while meeting stringent site and compliance constraints.

Design Features

The Padel Social Club at The O2 provides a premier experience for players and visitors, including 2 indoor and 3 outdoor padel courts, a bar and F&B terrace and wellness and changing facilities.

The design focuses on sustainability, modular construction, and high-quality user experience, integrating seamlessly with the iconic O2 dome environment.

Site Challenges

This project presented complex site challenges:

Heavily contaminated ground conditions.
Existing gas membrane 1m below ground, requiring a floating raft slab design.
Tight plot beneath the O2 dome, with multiple known and unknown utilities.
Busy service road running through the site that must remain operational.

Construction and Modular Solutions

To overcome these challenges, we worked closely with Costcap Ltd, the project QS and Construction Managers, using off-site modular solutions to reduce on-site trades and risk:

Bespoke glulam canopy with tensile parametric roof covering two courts
SIPS panels for main bar, clad in charred timber
3D prefabricated pods for WCs, changing, and wellness spaces
Converted shipping containers for modular amenities

These innovations allowed the project to maximise efficiency, minimise disruption, and maintain the iconic dome structure integrity.
