Public Halls Redevelopment, Harpenden, Hertfordshire
Project Overview
This project involves the conversion, refurbishment, and extension of the former Public Halls in Harpenden to create a new church and community facility for ChristChurch Harpenden.
Acting as Architectural Lead for RIBA Stages 4 & 5, we delivered a design that balances architectural sensitivity with modern functionality, transforming the existing building into a flexible and welcoming space for worship, community events, and social activities
Design Approach
Working within the constraints of the existing structure, the design focuses on maximising spatial quality and usability with minimal structural intervention. The result is a cohesive and adaptable environment that supports the evolving needs of the church and wider Harpenden community.
Flexible Community Spaces
The scheme introduces a range of flexible and inclusive spaces, including:
- Enhanced entrance and cafe space with large windows overlooking Harpenden Common
- Adaptable activity rooms using acoustic bi-fold partitions
- Reconfigured Sunday School spaces to support group learning and interaction
- Multi-use main hall and stage for large gatherings and events
- Improved circulation routes for seamless movement throughout the building
Staff and Administrative Areas
The first floor has been redesigned to provide modern, open-plan office space for staff. The existing flat is also being refurbished to create additional workspace, ensuring flexibility for future growth and operational needs.
Youth and Basement Facilities
The basement level is being transformed into a dedicated youth space, designed as an open-plan environment to support activities for younger members of the congregation. This area provides a safe, engaging, and purpose-built setting for community programmes.
Materiality and Interior Design
The interior design combines durability, warmth, and simplicity, creating a welcoming and cohesive atmosphere:
- Acoustic timber wall panels add texture and improve sound quality
- Engineered timber flooring provides continuity and resilience
- Large windows and natural light enhance wellbeing and connection to Harpenden Common
- Consistent material palette creates a calm and unified aesthetic throughout
Local Impact and Community Benefits
This redevelopment will create a vibrant community hub in Harpenden, supporting worship, social interaction, and local events. The project reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality community and faith-based architecture in Hertfordshire, designed for long-term adaptability and inclusivity.
